Top 5 Wins of the NHL Record Home Streak

Oh what a night! The Joe was rocking, a playoff type atmosphere. And despite Steve Ott’s anger issues, some questionable officiating both ways, and a late Dallas goal the Red Wings dominated for a 3-1 win and a new NHL record 21st straight home victory.

Detroit began its historic run after a 4-1 loss to Calgary on Nov. 3rd. Those who recall this game, will remember a Detroit team outplaying the Flames, only to cough a few costly turnovers to Team Canada hero Jerome Iginla. The loss would be the Red Wings sixth straight and had many fans in a state of frenzy.

But since then, it has been perfection at the Joe. Let’s revisit the top five wins of the streak:

5. Nov 5th 5-0 vs Ducks

With rumors swirling (grant it all of them from yahoos on twitter) the Wings made a statement, chasing Jonas Hiller from the pipes and outshooting the Ducks 17-1 in the first 13:30 of the game. Faith was surely restored after one of the NHL’s most dominating performances. When push came to shove, it was Captain Nicklas Lidstrom netting two goals and ending a six game slide. Watch how many goals come from the point.

4.  Dec 17 8-2 vs Kings

Coming off a tough late loss to the Predators, the Wings returned home and grabbed two big points from the Kings. As it has been so many times this season, the third and fourth lines carried the offense, accounting for all four first period goals.  A goalie change could not save the Kings, as starter Jonathan Quick gave up 3 goals on the first 7 shots. In the end, Cleary and Emmerton would each finish with three points.

3.  Feb 12 4-3 vs  Flyers

Just last Sunday, the Flyers came into town with hopes of spoiling a streak.  They were up to the task, and held a 2-1 lead after Brayden Schenn’s second goal of the night in the 2nd period. But the big guns showed up for Detroit as Datsyuk, Zetterberg and Frazen all scored. Joey McDonald, making his fifth straight start for the injured Howard, was superb in goal when needed in the third when Philly outshot Detroit 10-4.

Listen to the Joe rock in the last 1:05 of this game.

2. Jan 14 3-2 (OT) vs  Blackhawks

With a heated rival in town, the Wings had a chance to tie their franchise record for consecutive wins at 14. Things were looking good after Datsyuk’s no look pass sprung Bertuzzi to make it 2-0. But a bad bounce and a last minute goal sent the game into Overtime. From there, it was Bertuzzi batting a rebound out of midair to win the game with 38.3 seconds left.

1. Dec 27 3-2 vs  Blues

Tough to pick between any of the three home Red Wings victories this season against the Blues, but my choice is a gritty one goal win coming off a back to back after Christmas break. Before I go any further, can you imagine how good a playoff series between these two would be? But the Wings battled back from a 2-0 deficit, and it would have been more if not for a few acrobatic saves by Howard, to score two in the 3rd period and win. It was Kronwall scoring the game winner just 56 seconds after Datsyuk tied it up. The game had a playoff like atmosphere about it, and Kronwall’s goal was truly one of those jump out of your chair moments.

Did I miss one? Let us know. Here’s to number 22!
