What To Watch For: Wings vs Coyotes
The Coyotes come into Motown seeking their third straight victory over Central Division opponents. Here are some keys to tonight’s game.
1) Goaltending – Ilya Bryzgalov is the latest inconsistent goaltender in Philadelphia, but his departure from Phoenix caused many Coyotes fans to cringe entering the season. Instead, starter Mike Smith, who has never started more than 40 games in an NHL season, has been tremendous with a .931 save percentage. That’s just two points ahead of his counterpart tonight, Jimmy Howard. Both can make a strong case to represent the Western Conference in the All Star Game.
2) Filppula Returns – Reports are saying that Filppula should be back tonight after receiving a laceration on his ankle. The young forward has 21 points in just 25 games and is well on his way to a career season. The offense desperately needs him. Outside of two individual plays against St. Louis (Franzen and Cleary) they failed to generate much against the Blues.
3) Special Teams – The classic case of something has to give. The Red Wings are killing just 80% of their penalties. The Coyotes are scoring a mere 10% of their power play opportunities. If the Red Wings can avoid the sin bin altogether (9 minor penalties vs the Blues) it shouldn’t matter.
Should be a fun one! 7:30 on FSD.
