NHL Announces National TV Schedule
One of the more exciting days of the long, unbearable, NHL off season has arrived. The NHL and its partners released their National TV Schedule today. Wings fans can look forward to seeing their team compete in 12 games this year on NBC and Versus (soon to be renamed NBC Sports Network). That trails only Boston and Philadelphia (both with 13 games) for the most appearances on National TV.
Additionally, the Red Wings will be a part of 3 Hockey Night in Canada broadcasts on CBC. Canadian sports channel TSN plans to show 5 Red Wings games to its national audience, and the NHL Network plans to showcase the perennial playoff contenders 9 times (These games will be blacked out it the Detroit market).
Now if you are like me, you’d rather watch the Red Wings own Ken Daniels and Mickey Redmond do their thing on local Fox Sports Net. I will save that rant for another blog post, but I understand the honor and importance of gaining national exposure for your hockey team. And I also know the pain of being out of town and desperately searching for TV coverage of your favorite squad.
So no matter what corner of Canada or the United States you find yourself this winter, rest assured that there will plenty of opportunities to watch your favorite team.
Some notable nationally televised Red Wings games below:
- 11/25/11 Detroit @ Boston (Former champions play host in first NBC game of the year)
- 11/30/11 Tampa Bay @ Detroit (Yzerman returns home with the Eastern Conference finalist)
- 2/17/12 San Jose @ Detroit (rematch of last year’s seven game playoff battle)
- 4/7/12 Chicago @ Detroit (Final game of regular season)
